Did Pam Bondi dodge accountability at her Senate appearance?

By 12 October 2025No Comments

Attorney General Pam Bondi was called before the Senate Judiciary Committee to answer questions about her role in a series of high-profile controversies surrounding the Department of Justice. Senators focused on her reported involvement in convening a grand jury relating to former FBI Director James Comey, raising concerns that she may have acted under political influence rather than independent legal judgement. The committee also pressed her on the handling of the Epstein files, with senators asking directly if she had warned the President about his name being mentioned. Bondi refused to give a clear response, stating: “I am not going to discuss that with you.”

The questioning then moved to constitutional matters. Senators challenged the legality of deploying National Guard troops across state lines without local approval. Bondi defended the President’s authority, remarking: “If you’re not going to protect your citizens, President Trump will.” She insisted such deployments were necessary to guarantee public safety but avoided answering whether her office had provided legal justification.

This hearing underlined the strengths of legislative oversight, as senators were able to raise pressing concerns about accountability and executive power in public view. However, it also showed its limits. By refusing to answer questions, Bondi highlighted how executive officials can avoid meaningful scrutiny, leaving Congress with few tools beyond exposure.
