In UK politics, the term ‘nationalist’ tends to refer to people and parties who want independence for their region, such as Plaid Cymru (Wales) and the SNP (Scotland). In Northern Ireland, nationalist refers to the aspiration for a united Ireland, separate from Great Britain – this includes the political parties Sinn Féin and the SDLP.
